Nana Dorothy passed away Friday, April 27 around 4:45 pm (pdt). She was 89.
Nana was a fantastic grandmother. Everything you’d want and perhaps even expect in a Jewish grandmother — lots of love, laughs, stories, great cooking and a good measure of old-school Yiddish to keep me on my toes.
Though I was fortunate and am incredibly grateful for my relationship with her, Nana did not have an easy life. She was born into a family of 11 children and barely knew her own mother. She struggled with depression and a debilitating case of shingles for the greater part of her senior years.
Both Nana and Poppy (seen above) were always there for Miles and I. My memories are filled with them from my childhood and teenage years. Early trips to Palm Springs, the pony rides, the countless birthdays, the pencil marks on her kitchen wall proudly displaying our vertical height growth, chocolate chip cookies, brownies, buttered carrots, brisket with gravy, Saturday night television, movies, earthquakes, bacon (it’s not really pork), and love, always.
Rest in peace, Nana. I’m glad you are finally out of pain.
